Taxi Medical: What You Need to Know

If you are planning to drive a Taxi in the UK, you will need to pass a Taxi medical. This is a medical examination that is designed to assess whether you are fit and healthy enough to drive safely.

The Taxi medical examination consists of three parts:

  • An eyesight test: This test will assess your vision to ensure that it meets the minimum standards for driving a Taxi
  • A blood pressure check: This test will assess your blood pressure to ensure that it is within normal limits.
  • A medical questionnaire: This questionnaire will ask you about your medical history and any current medical conditions.

The Taxi medical examination is usually carried out by a doctor or other qualified healthcare professional. You can book an appointment at Vital Medicals.

What to expect at your Taxi medical

When you arrive for your Taxi medical, you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire about your medical history. You will also be asked to provide your driving licence.

The doctor or other healthcare professional will then carry out the eyesight test and blood pressure check. They will also ask you some questions about your medical history and any current medical conditions.

If you have any medical conditions, the doctor will need to assess how they could affect your driving. For example, if you have diabetes, the doctor will need to check that your blood sugar levels are well controlled.

Passing the Taxi medical

To pass the Taxi medical, you must meet the following criteria:
  • Your vision must meet the minimum standards for driving taxi.
  • Your blood pressure must be within normal limits.
  • You must not have any medical conditions that could affect your ability to drive safely.

If you have any medical conditions, the doctor may be able to give you advice on how to manage them so that you can pass the Taxi medical.

What if I fail the medical?

If you fail the Taxi medical, you will not be able to drive taxi. The doctor will explain to you why you have failed the medical and will give you advice on what you can do next.

If you have a medical condition, you may be able to improve your chances of passing the medical by getting treatment for your condition. You may also be able to get advice on how to manage your condition from a specialist doctor or other healthcare professional.

Renewing your medical

Once you have passed the medical, you will need to renew it every five years. You can renew your medical online or by post.

To renew your medical online, you will need to complete a questionnaire and provide your driving licence number. You will also need to pay a fee.

To renew your medical by post, you will need to download and complete a Taxi medical form. You will also need to send a copy of your driving licence and a cheque for the fee.

Conclusion

The medical is an important part of the process of becoming a commercial vehicle driver. It is important to be prepared for the medical and to be honest with the doctor about your medical history. If you have any medical conditions, you may want to get advice from a specialist doctor or other healthcare professional on how to manage them so that you can pass the medical.
