The Law- Working Time Regulations 1998
Employers Must offer Thier employees a Night Worker health assessment before the start Night work. This is because Night work is related with increased levels of stress which can be related to numerous health conditions.
If the Employer is unsure if an employee is Fit For Nightwork, a Follow up assessment must be organised so a decision is made.
A regular assessment must be offered.
What is a Night Worker ?
Staff who regularly work at least 3 hours during the ‘night period’ are night workers. The night period is 11pm to 6am, unless the worker and employer agree a different night period. If they do, it must be 7 hours long and include midnight to 5am. It must be agreed in writing.
What Night Worker Health Assessment do we offer
VitalMedicals has Trained Occupational Health Clinicians who have created a specific Health Questionnaire. This health Questionnaire can be provided to each of your Workers. Once completed, The Health Questionnaire is returned to us and a Occupational Health Clinician will review the results and provide a decision on their fitness to work. A certificate will be completed identifying if the employee is fit for Night Work, and if any specific workplace adjustments are advised.
What If a Medical Condition is Found ?
If during the Health Assessment a medical condition is found then an Occupational Health Telephone Interview is advised where the condition is explored in more detail. A decision is then made on the individuals Fitness to work.
How Often Does the Health assessment need to be conducted ?
Assessments must be conducted regularly and at VitalMedicalss we advise annual screening with health assessments.
What happens if a condition makes Night Working not possible?
The employer must offer suitable other work where possible if a worker has health problems that a doctor says are related to night work.
