HGV driver – 4 Steps to earn more as a HGV driver

In the HGV industry, it is not uncommon to become a freelancer and be your own boss. After you enroll for HGV/LGV driver training and get yourselves CAT C or CAT C+E license, you can now find a job or officially become a self-employed HGV driver.

If you have decided to go on the self-employment route, it means that you are now both the boss and the HGV driver. While going freelance is very normal in this industry, there are still steps that you need to follow through in order to set up your business. The following are some of the most important steps:

Step 1: Hire an Accountant or Any Professional Help If Necessary

No one can do multiple jobs at the same time with full efficiency. As you will have to spend the majority of your time and efforts on your HGV driving, you will certainly have no time to worry yourself with taxes and making calculations on a daily basis.

To make your life easier, you want to find an accountant to help you handle everything while you are working. You can ask your fellow freelance HGV drivers for some recommendations. Although it may seem like you are wasting money by hiring an accountant, it is still a worthwhile investment that you should consider making. They may also save you more money than you pay them.

Step 2: Register Your Business

Once you have hired an accountant and have all the paperwork ready, the next step is to register your business. This can easily be done through an online company registration via companies house with only a small registration fee, normally around £15. Your accountant may also come in handy during this process. They will be able to advise you the most relevant SIT code (Tax code for your type of work).

Step 3: Open a New Bank Account

After your company has been successfully registered, you can then open a bank account with your company registration number. This way, you can conveniently send and receive business payments through this account.

Step 4: Organise Everything and Be Ready to Promote Yourself As a HGV Driver

Your LGV training should have already prepared you to drive but you will need to organise your business and paperwork so that you have everything ready in time of need. Now, you can go ahead and start looking for gadgets that will help you drive safer and interact with clients more effectively. After this comes the most significant and most challenging part: promoting your business and selling your services.

In other words, this is now the time for you to get business out there and promote yourself as a self-employed HGV driver who is ready to work and establish a long-term relationship with outside transport companies and other employers.

If you’ve been working in the industry for some time this will be easy for you. However good tools to use would be linked in and facebook ads which can target transport companies specifically. Signing up to a HGV driver’s agency may be a good way to get work prior to building your reputation.

Time To Maximise Your Earnings as HGV driver

HGV jobs can be quite demanding for many people, thus causing them to turn to the alternative: self-employment. Going freelance is an especially great option for people who do not like to work under anyone. Moreover, self-employment offers the flexibility that many HGV drivers want. With HGV driver training, you will be ready to provide top service to everyone who is doing business with you, making them want to come back to you time and time again.
