What Happens at an Asbestos Medical? Protecting Your Health

For those whose work may involve exposure, whether through licensed removal or notifiable non-licensed work, regular asbestos medicals are a crucial safeguard. These examinations are not just a legal requirement under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012; they are a vital proactive step in protecting long-term health.
So, what can you expect when you attend an asbestos medical? The process is designed to monitor your respiratory health and detect any potential issues related to asbestos exposure as early as possible.
Your medical will typically begin with a detailed medical and occupational history. The doctor will discuss your work history, specifically inquiring about any known or suspected asbestos exposure, including the type, duration, and intensity. They will also delve into your general health, existing medical conditions, and smoking history, as these factors can influence respiratory health.
Following this, you’ll complete a respiratory symptom questionnaire. This asks about common symptoms associated with asbestos-related diseases, such as persistent coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath. Be honest and thorough in your answers, as this information guides the examination.
A clinical examination will then be conducted, with a particular focus on your respiratory system. The doctor will listen to your lungs for any abnormalities, such as crackling sounds, and assess your general respiratory function.
One of the most important components is the lung function test, or spirometry. This simple, non-invasive test measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how quickly you can do so. Changes in lung capacity or airflow can be an early indicator of asbestos-related lung conditions. It’s important to note that chest X-rays are not routinely part of these medicals unless there are specific clinical indications suggesting the need for further investigation.
Upon completion, the findings are reviewed by the appointed doctor. For licensed asbestos work, these medicals must be conducted by an HSE-appointed doctor at least every two years. For notifiable non-licensed work, a GMC-registered doctor can perform the medical, typically every three years. If any concerns are identified, the doctor will discuss them with you and may recommend further investigations or referral to a specialist.
