- In-depth Medical and Occupational History: The HSE Appointed Doctor will conduct a detailed review of your medical background, with a significant focus on your entire work history, particularly any and all known asbestos exposure. Your general health, including smoking history and pre-existing conditions, will also be thoroughly discussed.
- Respiratory Symptom Questionnaire: You will complete a detailed questionnaire designed to identify any respiratory symptoms like persistent cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, or chest pain.
- Thorough Clinical Examination: A physical examination will be performed, paying close attention to your respiratory system. The doctor will listen to your lungs for any abnormalities and assess your overall respiratory health.
- Lung Function Tests (Spirometry): This vital test measures your lung capacity and how efficiently air moves in and out of your lungs. Significant changes can be an early indicator of asbestos-related lung conditions.
- Chest X-ray (if clinically indicated): While not a routine part of every examination, an X-ray may be requested if the doctor finds any clinical indications or abnormalities during the physical examination or lung function tests that warrant further investigation.
Upon completion, if fit to continue work, a certificate of medical examination will be issued, which is valid for two years. These medicals must be repeated at least every two years for as long as the individual continues to undertake licensed asbestos work.
