I take Metformin – Can I drive a HGV?

Metformin

A lot of our drivers take metformin and are worried that as they have diabetes they will not be able to drive. So what are the rules when you are on metformin?

As long as you do not take any medication that lower your blood sugar you do not need to measure your blood sugars.

If you only take METFORMIN or a gliptin such as ALOGLIPTIN or SITAGLIPTIN you do NOT need to monitor your blood sugars.

You can continue to drive a HGV vehicle as long as:

  1. You have not had a severe hypoglycaemic episodes in the last 12 months (A low blood sugar where someone has had to come and assist you)
  2. If you develop inability to know when you have a low blood sugar (unlikely to occur if you are only on metformin or a gliptin)
  3. You have not had any visual complications of diabetes such as unable to see or your visual fields are affected.
  4. If you get laser treatment for your eyes you must let DVLA know

What if your diabetes is managed with diet alone?

You do not need to tell the DVLA this, however it does need to be mentioned on your D4 medical.

See the attached PDF checking for what you need to do for diet controlled diabetes and when you need to inform the DVLA about this. Diet controlled diabetes

See our post on insulin which goes through the different medication you need to monitor your blood sugars with.

Always check with your GP when they start you on new diabetic medication and what the DVLA requirements are for these.
